My recent focus has been on the transformations we go through in life. This series enabled me to tell nine different stories of my own life that many others may share as well. The concept was that Joy would get covered up by time, only to reveal itself again. This was achieved by masking a textured plywood wall with a smooth cut-out of the Joy design. Next, a canvas is placed on the wall over the design and painting commences. After multiple passes with brushes, rough rags, and other marking tools are made, the cut-out's edges begin to reveal themselves in the painting's surface. The more the surface is worked, the more that Joy prevails. This transformative process is both physical and meditative in nature. Below are the nine paintings that resulted from my first iteration of this very powerful and profound exercise.
